how colour is used in print medium is split into two kinds

CMYK
cyan, magenta, yellow, key
 
RGB
red, green, blue

 CMYK when over layed with each other it will turn into darker colours and thus it is how natural printing ink, paint, or any other tactile art media,
RGB is used in web design primarily as it is how the majority of screen technology works today, as colours are over layed with each other it creates lighter tones.

Keeping this in mind, even if you where to submit a peice of traditionally drawn media you still have to consider aspects of your work that may come out differently in the printing process as scanning in a work may unintentionally alter colours.


With this in mind we where tasked to draw an editorial image

 

My First images had some visually striking ideas however some of them may have been misdirected or possibly suggest different things than what the article has intended.

My first draft is meant to be empathetic, the use of nets in bird poaching separating birds form their natural habitat, often putting them just out of reach. while this might be the most empathic thing it may not be the right thing to focus on, as we are trying to give a message of hope as this poaching is trying to be combated. 

My second one i tried to communicate the birds being set free with criminals being arrested, however this may be more focused on symbols of wanting for peace with the use of bird in flight imagery.

My third one was the idea I have gone with, while the original idea is close to describing why the birds are being poached, this imagry was originally taken for the bird being dead on the plate instead of hurt or laying on the plate. however with it's striking use of imagry it was brought forward with it's idea just needing slight adjustments to tone down the violence of the image

It was recommended to me that i let the bird fly in escape, while possibly having a fork hold it down, i experimented with some of the ways i could do this.

 I experimented with the ideas of composition and human presence within the picture, the use of cutlery within the work, I decided to go with the bottom thumbnail, with some adjustments as it is both graceful and has the most memorable image of the bird with a strong silhouette.
I brought in aspects of my first thumbnail with the fork and fist used, and decided to go with a stronger stance to it, changing it into a fist than the regular holding of a fork.

I took large amounts of inspiration from other editorial illustrators and wanted to use a simplistic and bold colour scheme to match this bold and forward message about the birds and their current condition, having a looming threat of a darkly shadowed hand and fork contrasting with a bright songbird finally being able to fly, but not without being hurt. It is both a message of hope towards the veiwer and a warning that this poaching is still going on with the torn feathers in the tines of the fork.

I had made sure that all of the colours where checked against a pantone chart once i had created my initial colour pallet, while i was able to get great colour matches on most of the colours i used, i am slightly disappointed with the dark blue i went with as i could not get the original subtlety of the colour as i did before with the pantone chart.
